The holidays are here, and with the festivities brings parties, guests, cooking, and baking! It’s a wonderful time of year to enjoy gatherings, but it also puts wear and tear on all appliances – namely, your garbage disposal. Think about all that action your sink gets around this time of year. Pushing leftover food and cooking wastes down the drain really takes a toll on your disposal. So how can you keep it in shape this holiday season?
Top 3 Garbage Disposal Tips for Your Holiday Gathering
Many of us view our disposal as our very own kitchen super hero, and many times it saves us lots of trouble when hosting a crowd. Unfortunately, we abuse this privilege quite often. There are a number of things that should never (and we mean never) go into the garbage disposal!
Here are three food items to avoid putting down your disposal:
- F.O.G. – Fats, Oils, and Grease should never ever go down your kitchen sink. A lot of these materials are flushed down as a liquid but then coagulate as they cool. They can then trap other debris and clog up the drain.
- Bones – After you lose the larger end of the wishbone to good old Cousin Eddie, don’t forget to toss it in the trash – and NOT in the sink. Yes, it’s just one chicken bone, but just like the F.O.G., it can trap other debris, clog everything up, and then you are in for one Christmas quagmire!
- Shells – Egg shells, shellfish shells, corn husks, potato peelings – basically any hard casing around food should never be shoved in the disposal. These items dull the blades and reduce the efficiency of your disposal.
